Stansted airport pick-up: where to wait, the charges, and the free option

The way to collect someone at Stansted without paying is the Mid Stay car park, the same free Set Down area used for drop-offs. The first 60 minutes are free, and a free shuttle bus runs between the car park and the terminal. Park in Mid Stay, and your passenger rides the shuttle out to you once they are through arrivals. As long as you leave within the hour, it costs nothing.

This is the better choice for a pick-up specifically, because an arrival is hard to time and the free hour gives you room to wait without a meter running. One trap to avoid: re-entering the Mid Stay within an hour of first going in adds a £48 charge, so go in once and wait rather than driving in and out. If the flight is badly delayed, wait outside the airport and only drive in once your passenger is actually through.

Two places catch people out. The Express Set Down kerb directly outside the terminal is for dropping off, not waiting: the charge starts the moment the cameras read your plate, and a wait for an arrival usually runs past the 15-minute band into the higher charge. The airport approach roads are controlled, so you cannot simply pull over on the roadside and wait for a call either.

The practical rule is that there is nowhere free to sit at the kerb. Either pay the Short Stay hourly rate to wait inside, or use the free Mid Stay area and let the shuttle bring your passenger out. Trying to time a kerbside arrival is how a free collection turns into a £28 charge.

If you do use the Express Set Down kerb to collect someone, the charge is the same as for a drop-off: £10 for up to 15 minutes and £28 for up to 30, which is the maximum stay. There is no longer band, and re-entering within 30 minutes adds a further £28. Payment is online or by phone afterwards, by 23:59 the day after the visit, or it becomes a £100 Parking Charge Notice (£60 if paid within 14 days).

The difference for a pick-up is only the timing: with a drop-off you control when you arrive, but with a collection you are waiting on bags and passport control, which is exactly when the kerb gets expensive.

If you would rather meet your passenger inside the terminal than wait in a car park, use one of the Short Stay car parks and walk to the arrivals hall. Short Stay runs on an hourly tariff, from £13 for up to 30 minutes and £21 for an hour, and the premium zones are a covered walk of a few minutes to the terminal.

This suits collecting someone who needs help with bags, an elderly relative, or anyone who would struggle to find a shuttle stop. For a straightforward pick-up where they can manage the shuttle themselves, the free Mid Stay hour is cheaper. The choice is the usual one: pay a little to be at the door, or save it and add a short shuttle ride.

The single biggest cause of an expensive pick-up is arriving too early at the kerb. Plan on 20 to 40 minutes after the landing time before your passenger walks out, and more on a busy evening. The landing time is only when the wheels touch down: taxiing to the gate, the walk in, passport control and waiting at the baggage belt all come after it, and a flight arriving at a satellite gate adds the transit time on top.

Check the Stansted arrivals board before you leave home, and again before you drive into the Mid Stay area, so you go in when they are genuinely close to coming out rather than when the plane lands. Hand luggage only and a quick passport queue can be 20 minutes; checked bags and a busy hall can be the best part of an hour.

If someone else is doing the driving, the charge is not your problem. Licensed taxis use the rank outside the terminal, and private hire vehicles, including Uber, have designated pick-up points; any kerbside cost is built into the fare rather than billed to you. If you book a minicab in advance, confirm the meeting point with the driver, because the official pick-up points are not on the immediate forecourt.
