Where the shops are: airside and landside
Stansted has one terminal, and the split that decides what you can reach is security. Most of the shops are airside, past the search, where the duty-free hall, the brand stores and the food all sit together on the departures concourse. Landside, before security, the retail is thin: a WHSmith in the check-in hall and a few coffee and food kiosks, and not much else. So unless you only want a coffee and a paper before you check in, plan to shop after you are through security.
Opening hours track the flying day. Most shops run from around 04:00 to 22:00, with World Duty Free open for the first departures (from roughly 03:30) through to the last call late evening, and Boots airside on a similar long day. The smaller fashion and gift units keep tighter hours and may not be open for the very earliest flights. Because the terminal is being redeveloped under the Transformation Programme, the exact line-up shifts, so treat the brand list below as the current shape rather than a fixed map.
The shops and brands
World Duty Free is the anchor, the first shop you reach after security, covering fragrance, cosmetics, alcohol, tobacco, sunglasses and confectionery. Beyond it, the airside line-up spreads across a few categories:
- Health and beauty: Boots (with a pharmacy), Rituals, The Body Shop, MAC Cosmetics and the fragrance counters inside World Duty Free.
- Fashion and accessories: Marks and Spencer, Ted Baker, Superdry, Accessorize, Swarovski and similar names, plus sunglasses and travel-accessory units.
- Tech and travel kit: InMotion for headphones, chargers, adapters and the like, and the Excess Baggage Company for bags, wrapping and weighing.
- Books, snacks and essentials: WHSmith, which has a branch both landside and airside, for papers, drinks, snacks and last-minute bits.
- Drink and gifts: World of Whiskies for a wider spirits range, and Glorious Britain for British gifts and souvenirs.

Timing, far gates, and the tax-free question
Two practical points save money and stress. First, do your shopping in the main terminal, not at the gate. The widest choice sits in the central departures area before the satellites, and the walk out to Satellite 3 (gates 40 to 59) is around 15 minutes with far less beyond security, so buy before you head to a far gate. Leave time if your flight is in the first early wave too, when the smaller fashion and gift units may not have opened yet.
Second, be clear on what "tax free" means here, because it is easy to overpay assuming everything airside is a bargain. Since January 2021 the UK has scrapped both the VAT refund scheme for overseas visitors and the old airside VAT-free concession on general goods, so clothing, tech, sunglasses and gifts sell at normal high-street prices with VAT included. What genuinely can be cheaper is duty free on alcohol, tobacco and fragrance, now available on every departure since Brexit, plus World Duty Free's own promotions. Treat the fashion and tech units as convenience rather than saving, and check a price against home before you buy.
World Duty Free, in brief
World Duty Free is the biggest shop and the reason many people browse at all, so it has its own page. The short version: since Brexit you can buy duty-free alcohol and tobacco on every departure from Stansted, EU and beyond, not just long-haul. The deals are genuine on some lines (up to 40% off fragrance, up to 50% off selected spirits) and thin on others (tobacco is often no cheaper than home).
The two tricks worth knowing are Reserve & Collect, which gives an extra 10% off if you reserve online before you fly, and the free Shop Now & Collect on Return, which holds your shopping until you land so you do not carry it on holiday.
