Tottenham Hale to Stansted Airport: the quickest way in from London

Tottenham Hale is the best-placed London station for Stansted, and the reason is geography rather than service quality: it is the last stop before the line runs out through the Lea Valley to the airport.

In order of how often they are the right call: the Stansted Express, direct and about 37 minutes; the National Express A6 or A8 coach, which also starts its London run here and takes around 45 minutes for less money; and car or taxi, if you are driving anyway or splitting a fare. What makes the station genuinely useful is the Victoria line. King’s Cross, Oxford Circus and Victoria are all a single ride away with no change, so for a large slice of central and north London, coming out to Tottenham Hale and joining the airport train here beats travelling into Liverpool Street first. You save around 11 minutes on the rail leg and 20p on the fare.

The Stansted Express is the direct train, operated by Greater Anglia, and Tottenham Hale is one of its two London calling points alongside Liverpool Street. The operator still lists Stratford as a third, but that station no longer has a through train, so a rail journey from there changes here at Tottenham Hale. Journey time. The airport publishes approximately 37 minutes, and departures sampled on 28 July 2026 ran between 34 and 37 minutes. Compare that with about 48 minutes from Liverpool Street. Because it is rail rather than road, the time holds up at exactly the periods when the coach and a taxi do not.

Frequency. Every 15 minutes during the day, seven days a week. Four an hour means a missed train is a short wait rather than a problem, which matters when you are working back from a check-in deadline.

At the airport end. The station sits directly under the terminal, a two-minute walk with lifts, escalators and ramps, so there is no shuttle and no outdoor leg with your bags. That is worth more than it sounds when it is raining and you are running late.

The one thing Tottenham Hale does not give you is a seat guarantee at the busiest times. The train has already loaded at Liverpool Street on airport-bound services, so on a Friday evening or a Sunday afternoon you may be standing with your luggage for part of the run. Advance singles start from £9.70 from Tottenham Hale, against £9.90 from Liverpool Street. The cheapest fares need booking well ahead, and Advance tickets go on sale from six months to three days before travel. Leave it to the day and you pay considerably more: the cheapest single available on the day was £19.00 when checked on 28 July 2026, so booking ahead roughly halves the cost.

Now the expensive part, and it catches people out often enough that it is worth repeating. Oyster cards are not valid to or from Stansted Airport. Contactless payment is, whether that is a bank card or a mobile wallet, but Oyster is not. The gates at Tottenham Hale will still let you tap in with an Oyster, so you can complete the whole journey believing you have paid and arrive at the airport without a valid ticket. The penalty is a £100 Penalty Fare plus the full single fare for the journey, reduced by £50 if you pay within 21 days.

The fix is simple: tap in with contactless, buy a ticket before you board, or pre-book online for the cheapest fare. Keep the Oyster for your onward travel across London, where it works normally.

Two things about the current timetable are specific to Tottenham Hale and worth knowing before you plan around it.

The Friday-night overnight service. From 3 July to 25 September 2026, Stansted Express is running additional overnight trains every 30 minutes on Friday nights into Saturday mornings, supporting late arrivals and early departures. Most of those services run between the airport and Tottenham Hale, with only some early trains continuing to Liverpool Street. In practice that makes Tottenham Hale the London terminus for the overnight service, and it is a genuine reason to pick this station over Liverpool Street for a Friday-night arrival or a Saturday dawn departure. Outside that window the trains do not run through the night, and the 24-hour coach takes over.

Planned maintenance through late summer 2026. Several late-evening and early-morning services are diverted to call at Seven Sisters instead of Tottenham Hale: the late-evening trains on 17 to 20 August, the 04:52 from Tottenham Hale on 18 to 21 August, and all trains until 08:10 on Sunday 23 August. On 31 August to 3 September the arrangement reverses, with two late-evening services calling at Tottenham Hale instead of Seven Sisters. Seven Sisters is also on the Victoria line, one stop further in, so the diversion is manageable, but do not turn up at Tottenham Hale for an 04:52 in that window without checking. The decision in one line: take the Stansted Express unless you are travelling overnight outside the Friday window, or price matters more than half an hour.

Take the train if you want the quickest and most predictable trip. About 37 minutes, every 15 minutes, from £9.70 booked ahead, straight into the station beneath the terminal. From anywhere on the Victoria line it is the obvious answer.

Take the coach if you are travelling through the night on a day other than Friday, or if the fare matters more than the clock. Tottenham Hale is the first London stop on both the A6 and A8 routes, at about 45 minutes from the airport, and the coach runs 24 hours a day. You give up around eight minutes and the guarantee of a clear run on the M11.

Drive or take a taxi if you are in a group, splitting the cost, or leaving at an hour when neither the train nor a connection into Tottenham Hale is convenient. Check the parking options before you set off, and the check-in times for your airline so you know what you are actually working back from.
